School Streets – Enjoy Your Journey to the School

Project Reference: 2024-1-HU01-KA220-SCH-000245303

School Streets is an international initiative that promotes safer and more sustainable school environments in Hungary, Romania, and Macedonia, drawing on the extensive expertise of our Belgian partner. The project focuses on introducing and implementing the school street concept — streets around schools temporarily closed to motor traffic during drop-off and pick-up times — to encourage walking and cycling among students.

Through the collaborative development of practical guidelines, pilot activities, and knowledge exchange, the project aims to make daily journeys to school safer, healthier, and more enjoyable for children, parents, and local communities.

Activities

The project’s main objective is to develop comprehensive guidelines for municipalities and primary schools on how to plan and implement school streets effectively.

Local activities will include:

  • Pilot events, such as Car-Free Days, to demonstrate the benefits of school streets.
  • Side initiatives, including Pedibus and Bicibus (walking and cycling buses), to promote active mobility.
  • Communication and dissemination actions to share project results and inspire wider adoption across Europe.
  • Transnational project meetings to foster collaboration, review progress, and plan next steps.

Impact

The project will provide practical and adaptable guidelines for primary schools and municipalities across Europe, proving that implementing school streets is achievable in diverse local contexts.

By testing and demonstrating the concept in Hungary, Romania, and Macedonia, the project aims to build confidence among communities and policymakers while strengthening the capacity of partner organizations at local, national, and international levels in the field of sustainable mobility and urban design.
